The amount of research and evidence showing how effective sprinkler systems can be at minimizing loss of life and property damage in a fire grows by the day. Recently, a demonstration held in Nashville only served to underline this fact. Hosted by the National Fire Sprinkler Association and the Tennessee Department of Commerce & Insurance, the exercise showed what would happen in two rooms that were exactly the same, except one had a sprinkler system in place and the other did not.
Sprinklered Room vs. Room with No Sprinklers
About one hundred people gathered to watch the demonstration, and the results were definitely eye opening for some in attendance. While the room without a fire sprinkler was completely engulfed in flames within a matter of minutes, the other room came out relatively unscathed. There was only minor damage done to the room and the furniture inside of it before the sprinkler was able to put out the fire.
Sprinklers Save Lives and Property
At the end of the demonstration, the NFSA president noted that while some items in the room with the sprinkler were damaged, nothing was unsalvageable. On the other hand, the other room was completely destroyed. This is just a small example of what could happen to a house or a larger building in the event of an actual fire. More importantly than saving furniture and property, fire sprinklers can also save lives.
New Fire Sprinkler Laws
There are currently many new laws being implemented across the country in order to better prepare property owners in the event of a fire. In fact, several counties in Tennessee, the same state where this event was held, require sprinkler systems to be installed in new buildings. We only hope that more demonstrations like this one can convey to people how important sprinkler systems can be when it comes to putting out fires.
